Comcast makes an end run around U-verse & MediaRoom with Xfinity

If you subscribe to digital cable in the US, you’re probably familiar with the horribly outdated programming guide UI on most cable boxes. AT&T’s U-verse, OTOH, provides a beautiful UI courtesy of Microsoft’s MediaRoom technology.

Comcast’s Xfinity service has struck back by extending control of the cable box to mobile devices and PCs on which it can provide better UIs that can be rolled out relatively easily and don’t require any changes to their boxes. I can now change TV channels from my Droid or from a very well appointed UI on the Xfinity site accessible via a browser:
