If your name is Jimbo and you’re located in the Florida panhandle, it’s very likely people already hold your intellect in low regard. Today a man fitting that description who also happens to be 10th ranked Florida State’s head football coach proceeded to make things worse for himself by railing against the BCS’ computer rankings. You see, ol’ Jimbo thinks Florida State, who lost to unranked NC State this season, is the #4 team in the country behind undefeated Kansas State, Oregon, and Notre Dame. According to him, a poll based on coaches’ opinions only is the way to go.
The problem with that – besides the complete abandonment of objectivity that it involves – is 3 subjective human polls don’t agree with him at all. The USA Today Poll, ESPN Power Rankings and AP Top 25 rank FSU as #10 (same as BCS), #8, and #6:
Hey Jimbo, here’s an idea: if you want a higher ranking, then don’t lose to 4 (possibly 5 after this coming weekend) loss teams. It’s as simple as that.
UPDATE: NC State have since finished their season with 5 losses and fired their coach. Florida State, for its part, got destroyed 37-26 by the Gators at home in their season finale.
