How to fix the Windows Store’s “current internet connection is slow” error

·

After successfully installing the new TripAdvisor Windows 8.1 app on my desktop, I tried installing it on my laptop, but was met with this error message:

Your purchase couldn’t be completed

This app can’t be purchased because your current internet connection is slow. Please try again using a different connection.

Another day, another Windows Store error.
Surprise: your internet connection isn’t the issue here.

Switching to a different internet connection didn’t work. Fortunately, Googling the problem turned up this thread with a few fixes that only worked for me after I applied them in a certain order, which is what this post is about.

Here’s how to fix the problem:

  1. Ensure the PC is not connected directly to the internet, i.e. is on a LAN and behind a NAT/SPI firewall.
  2. Reboot the PC.
  3. Upon rebooting, disable your antivirus software (Avast 2014 in my case).
  4. Press Windows key + R.
  5. In the window that pops up, enter “wsreset.exe” without the quotes.
  6. Click OK or hit Enter. The Windows Store loading screen will appear as below. Be patient as it may take up to 15 minutes to load completely.* Wait for it to complete and your problem should be resolved.
  7. Install the app you wanted.
  8. Re-enable your antivirus software.
I have a dream that one day Windows NUI will the resurrect progress indicator.
I have a dream that one day Windows NUI will the resurrect progress indicator.

In my experience, most Windows Store bugs are due to interfering security software. I’m not sure if this is due to the NUI/RT not being designed with such software in mind, or just bad testing/development on the part of security software dev shops.

  1. Didn’t need to turn off anti-virus in my case but the wsreset did the trick.

  2. After all of the above was a 3 windows reinstall upgrading to 81 for it to work for a few apps then same problem again I uninstalled my third party security ware MacAfee in my case and still did not work then I went to the task manager stopped and restarted to WSS process right at the near the bottom of the processes and hey presto windows store is now working perfectly have stuck with using windows own built in security and so far so good. Having read a few sights it seems to be to do with security suites whether that’s an inherent bug in Windows 8.1 or with the security I don’t know but I saw on another thread it was also their security suite which caused their problem though they did not have to perform the WSS process with theirs so for the moment I’ll be sticking with the built in security.

  4. A major caution: make sure you do an sfc /scannow first (and a DISM recovery if needed) – if certain system files are corrupt when you start wsreset it will fail to complete and continue to try every time you load the store app. This effectively locks you out of the app and MS has no ability to stop this. Their “solution” to this loop is to create a new profile which is an absolute nightmare.

    1. I had the same problem tracked it down to my security software so I uninstalled it and let windows defender take over then did wsreset and restarted my laptop and now all is well with the store. On reading a few other forums it does tend to be security software that is the route cause whether its do to with the windows or the security code I don’t know but I’ve just stuck to using the built in windows security software now and have had no more problems installing from the app store good luck.
