What to do when Windows Action Center says avast! Antivirus is turned off

·

So you boot into Windows, only to have Windows Action Center notify you in scary terms that avast! Antivirus is turned off and your computer is unprotected. Fortunately, you can fix this without rebooting (the commonly posted solution):

  1. Right-click the avast! icon in the system tray.
  2. Mouseover avast! shields control.
  3. Click Disable for 10 minutes.
  4. Click the Windows taskbar to exit the avast! icon menu.
  5. Repeat Steps 1 & 2.
  6. Click Enable all shields.
  7. Check Windows Action Center: the security notification should be gone now.
ActionCenter
Phew! All back to normal now.

    1. You might have to reboot and try again. I’ve noticed that happen to me a couple times since installing Update 1 for Windows 8.1.

  6. not working. tried to reboot and still unable to turn avast on again. now I’m on win defender (better than none), using most recent win 8.1.

  7. This only works until rebooting – then W8.1 says it’s off again. This is only a band-aid that has to be applied each boot. We need a permanent fix. FYI – I’ve used avastclear.exe to insure Avast! is removed and then run avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe to install the latest version. Still get the message that Avast! and windows defender are turned off. I finally just told the Action Center to turn off messages since there doesn’t appear to be a permanent fix.coming from either Microsoft or Avast!.
